Northern Power & Light's platform operates in a similar way to a farmer's market, where producers can sell their energy directly to customers. This way local renewable producers are able to retain more of the retail price for the electricity they produce, and consumers are able to enjoy a direct relationship with their energy at no additional cost.

Our revenue model is similar to other "sharing economy" platforms, such as those that enable you to book a stay in someone’s home or get a lift somewhere; Northern Power & Light takes a percentage from the supplier-side for the services we provide, such as billing, customer service, and the marketing of our producers on our platform.

Unlike tangible goods that can easily be traced to a source, electricity gets pooled in the grid, and this system facilitates the reliable delivery of electricity to your home. Currently, an Energy Service Company or the utility itself will buy energy from a producer, and then sell it to retail customers at a mark up. Northern Power and Light producers are compensated directly by customers like you.
